Get to Know Aeolidia, Marketing Geniuses for Your Handmade Shop

Get to Know Aeolidia, Marketing Geniuses for Your Handmade Shop 08

If you’re in need of a business logo, or are struggling to find the inspiration for your product packaging, we’d love to introduce you to Aeolidia. Aeolidia is a group of creatives on a mission to help other creatives with their marketing initiatives. All small businesses need help from time to time to help create or enhance the brand for their business. And Aeolidia has a special place in their heart for handmade businesses – when they first started their marketing organization the Aeolidia team focused on handmade shops. We have heard nothing but rave reviews from shops that have had great success with Aeolidia, so we strongly suggest you check them out.

Want to know more? You can read our fun interview with Aeolidia‘s Captain and Founder, Arianne Foulkes, below. You can also sign up for their newsletter which is chock-full of interesting marketing tips and hints to improve your business.

Get to Know Aeolidia, Marketing Geniuses for Your Handmade Shop 01

1. What is Aeolidia and how was it created? What was the inspiration for Aeolidia?

Aeolidia is fun and friendly place to work with expert-type people on your creative small business. Mostly to develop a web presence, but for all the other bits and bobs that support that goal. We are professional, punctual, and client-oriented. We are deeply invested in each client’s progress and success.

We only work for creative, product-based businesses, and we like things that are unique, well-designed, and full of the maker’s personality.

2. What services does Aeolidia provide?

The core of our business is in brand identity (logos, business stationery, marketing materials, product packaging and display), and custom ecommerce web design. Our design work is unique to each client and meant to appeal to their particular customer. We don’t cut corners, and our work is transformative. When a project is done, our client has everything they need to move forward confidently.

I found out early on that there are a lot of things to cover when you’re building a transformative website for a business. The website itself won’t work if the content isn’t stellar as well. To support that need, we also have a copywriter, a product stylist and photographer, a marketing consultant, and a trademark lawyer.

Examples of our work are:

3. How did you come up with the name for Aeolidia?

Aeolidia is the scientific (Latin) name of the shaggy mouse nudibranch, a lovely little sea slug. I studied marine biology in college, just for fun. There is no magical brand story that explains what a sea slug has to do with a web design company (why is a raven like a writing desk?). I just like it!

4. Who all works for Aeolidia?

We are a team of about twenty, and we are growing a little bit in 2016 so we can take on more projects. Aeolidians love and believe in small business, and we’re dedicated to discovering each new business’ unique story, and helping them tell that story more effectively to their audience.

5. What are some of your favorite projects that you have worked on?

I’ve found that my favorite projects are less about the work we have done and more about the hard work I see our client putting in. When we’re working in tandem with a client who completely understands the unique value their business has, who exactly their target customer is, and can pull that all together into content and a marketing message that people adore, we know our work is going to help them shine. Launching a new site for a client who knows how to run with it and use it as a tool to promote themselves and create sales is a thrill!

Some standout clients include these hard workers:

Mapamundi Kids

June and January

Shop Sweet Lulu

Tilde

6. Do you do a lot of work for handmade businesses? If so, what kind of work have you done?

Yes, we used to only work with handmade businesses! We started out in that niche more than ten years ago, right before Etsy came on the scene. We have grown up along with these crafters and makers, and have learned so much.

Now our work has evolved so that we work best with businesses that started small and are experiencing growing pains and are ready to take things to the next level. We’re the right choice if you have a great product and a growing customer base, but feel held back from reaching the next step for your business. Our area of expertise is with businesses at the tipping point who want a push away from their DIY efforts and over to where they can make much bigger sales. Think Shark Tank, Oprah, Martha Stewart features. We like to prepare these small biz achievers for whoever may knock at their door.

7. Do you have any new projects that you would like to explore in the future?

Always! What we’re doing right now internally is perfecting and honing our core business so that we can create these transformations for our clients even more creatively, efficiently, and enjoyably. Hearing from potential new clients is one of the best parts of my day and it’s always fun to see who shows up and what we can do for them.

8. What are your social media profiles?

The best place to find out what’s going on and to keep in touch with us is our newsletter, which you can learn more about, and subscribe to here.

Subscribers get access to my 45 minute video presentation about branding which will explain to you why things seem so easy for others, and you can’t get any traction. This was previously only available to attendees of the Maker Mentors conference, but they’ve graciously given me permission to share it for free to my subscribers. In addition to that, I’ve built up a solid list of “how to” worksheets and downloadable PDFs that help you make decisions and improve your business.

Our Facebook group has been very busy and we’ve been hosting Q&A sessions with expert guests on everything from product pricing to getting new wholesale clients. That group is here.

– Also, lovely sneak peeks on Instagram.

– Tips, examples, and gorgeous products on Pinterest.

Our Q&A with Moira of Badseed Studio

aftcra Featured Artisan Blog Cover - Badseed Studio Handmade Handcrafted industrial modern home decor made in the USA

Hailing from Milwaukee, we couldn’t help ourselves – we had to share a local artisan’s awesome artwork with you. Badseed Studio creates gorgeous modern and industrial home decor pieces that can be easily mixed and matched. With beautiful neutral colors and impressive attention to detail, these concrete handcrafted decorative items are the perfect amount of simplicity and intrigue.

You may be thinking “these will be a great gift for so-and-so”, but let’s face it … you’re totally going to end up keeping these Badseed Studio badass designs for yourself (and who’d blame you).

Badseed Studio on aftcra - handcrafted industrial modern home decor handmade and made in USA

1. Introduce yourself and the products that you make.

My name is Moira McAdams and I’m the owner of Badseed Studio. I make concrete planters, home décor, and artwork.

I live and work in Milwaukee, my hometown. My studio has taken over my basement and garage, so I’m currently on the hunt for a more permanent workspace.

Badseed Studios Industrial Design Modern Handmade Handcrafted American Made 02

2. How did you get started in your line of work?

I graduated from UW-Madison this spring. I studied landscape architecture which has bits of horticulture and botany, art and design, history, urban planning, environmental science…I loved it all! My broad interests were a good match for the city of Madison and I was able to find a variety of odd jobs and internships that included shopping for restaurants at the farmers market, botanical garden plant maintenance, farming, and beekeeping. I’m currently enjoying greenhouse work back in Milwaukee.

3. How long have you been doing your artwork?

I bought my first bag of cement in the spring of 2014, while I was still in school and about a year before I opened my shop. My first project was actually a tabletop for a woodworking class.

4. How did you come up with the name Badseed Studio?

My original business inspiration came from a frustrating search for garden decorations that weren’t angel themed or kitschy memorabilia. The idea was to create more modern outdoor décor, so I wanted an edgier name that also reflected the garden inspiration.

Badseed Studios Industrial Design Modern Handmade Handcrafted American Made 01

5. How do you create your work?

There’s not a lot of precedent in decorative concrete so it’s been a very experimental process. It’s definitely been a learning experience with lots of trial and error, and I’m finding new and better ways to do things all the time.

6. What is the inspiration for your work?

Concrete as a medium is rough and weighty, lending itself to urban influences and bulky geometry. These industrial elements are influential to me, but I’m especially inspired by the challenge of creating something delicate and beautiful that contradicts the traditional aesthetic.

7. What’s next for Badseed Studio?

Holiday items, and doing my first craft fairs!

8. As a small business owner, what is one piece of advice you would share with other small business owners?

Connect personally with your customers or potential customers. Making an impression strengthens your brand and is what sets your business apart from big box competitors.

9. What is a quote that you personally live by, or you have shared with others for inspiration?

‘Life serves the risk taker’

Badseed Studio - -Life serves the risk taker.-

10. Why did you choose to join aftcra, and what do you enjoy about the community?

aftcra offers a more intimate community than other platforms, and is a great way to connect with other shops as well as buyers who are truly interested in handmade American arts and crafts.

11. What does “handmade” and “handcrafted” mean to you?

To me, handcrafted means creating a more meaningful transaction between maker and buyer. It’s a privilege of owning a small business to be able to make a personal connection through a handmade item, and its part of what makes what I do so much fun.

Observing Disney World for Small Business Inspiration

Observing Disney World for Small Business Inspiration Merriweather Council Handmade Shop Advice

One of my nerdities is observing how big businesses operate… and then brainstorming how to apply those tactics and practices to small businesses, or not!

A few years ago I went to Disney World for the first time as an adult. I had been there before, as a child, and obviously the experiences were very different.

I don’t do rides, so I had a lot of time to observe while my friends were running from line to line. I also did a lot of bag-holding that trip, but that’s another story.

Here are a few of the things I noticed about Disney World – the business – that I loved and felt small business inspiration could certainly be derived from.

They have their own language

When the parks at Disney stay open late it’s called “magic hours” which I think we can all agree sounds way better than “extended hours” or “open late”… they expand their brand into every part of the experiences and the language they use is part of that. Another example: the people working behind the scenes at Disney world aren’t just employees, they are Imagineers. It’s actually brilliant. Not only does it elevate and expand the brand, it peaks our imagination and pulls us in. “What’s that?” we wonder, and explore further.

Further, the branding is seamless, and it’s literally everywhere

Any one who has been to Disney World knows this – there are Mickey Mouse ears EVERYWHERE. It’s actually a game you can play in the park – to spot all the hidden Mickeys. Everything they do is branded

They operate under the original intent, completely

Walt Disney had a vision and mission – and even though he is no longer alive, his vision lives on and his company uses his mission as a way point for all that they do. They use the original intent to provide new experiences and additions every year.

A great experience can be had at any price point

As a young adult traveling with peers to Disney World, I had a limited budget. My trip was still full of fun, “magic” and memories. My budget was not a factor – I had a wonderful time in Disney World despite my limited funding. This is because Disney offers lodging and meals at every price point all of which are branded, themed, and magic infused. There is no loss of entertainment at the lower price point!

I can see plenty of ways these tactics can be applied to any business including small, craft based businesses. How about you? Do you see any ways you can apply these to your shop and business?

Our Q&A with Lauren of TheWoodenCorner

TheWoodenCorner on aftcra handcrafted handmade jewelry organizer jewelry box woodwork jewelry box chic modern american made 11

We like to mix it up at aftcra, so we wanted to introduce you to this talented woodworker who creates funky, fun and stylish jewelry organizers. We love the variety of products that TheWoodenCorner creates and how she makes organizing fresh and funky while showcasing your jewelry instead of hiding it. So, let’s meet Lauren D’Amato of TheWoodenCorner, aftcra’s featured artisan for September, and learn about what inspired her to create her work, what steps she took to build TheWoodenCorner, and how she learned her craft.

TheWoodenCorner on aftcra handcrafted handmade jewelry organizer woodwork jewelry box chic modern american made 01

1. Tell us about yourself and your company, TheWoodenCorner

I’m Lauren D’Amato. My shop’s name is TheWoodenCorner and I make wooden jewelry organizers. I’ve been working with TheWoodenCorner for one year.

I graduated from college with a degree in Engineering and am now working full time as an Application Developer at a pharmaceutical company.  I’ve always enjoyed DIY projects around the house, and my sister wanted me to help her build an organizer for her jewelry.  We built one and loved it, and I thought to myself, everyone should have one of these! It also doesn’t hurt that my father was a carpenter and I watched him build things around the house all the time when I was growing up. The rest is pretty much history.

TheWoodenCorner on aftcra handcrafted handmade jewelry organizer jewelry box woodwork jewelry box chic modern american made 04

2. What is your workspace like?

I’ve turned the detached garage next to my house into a woodshop.  This is where the frames are built. I also have a room downstairs that I’ve coined “Shipping & Receiving”.  This is where all the staining, hardware installation and packaging is done.

3. How did you come up with the name “TheWoodenCorner”?

I wanted to incorporate the rustic wooden feel my jewelry organizers give, so I definitely thought I needed to include the word “wood” somewhere in the name of the shop.  TheWoodenCorner feels homespun and cozy at the same time.

I’d like to expand my product line to other types of wooden organizers in the future. This is why I named my shop TheWoodenCorner, it is expandable to different types of wood products. One product in particular I am working on is a kitchen/foyer organizer.  It will have cork for pinning important notes, hooks for keys and a space to hold mail.

TheWoodenCorner on aftcra handcrafted handmade jewelry organizer jewelry box woodwork jewelry box chic modern american made 03

4. What steps do you take to create your work?

1. Cut the wood to right size for the frame.
2. Assemble the frames using Kreg Joints (these are very sturdy joints)
3. Sand, Sand, Sand! (for that smooth flawless finish)
4. Stain & Finish
5. Assemble hardware
6. Quality Check
7. Package it up!

5. Where do you derive the inspiration for your work?

I’ve been working a “9-5” job for the last seven years.  While I enjoy my day job, my dream is to run my own business and for it to be profitable enough to live off of. I absolutely love being outside; being kept inside the office behind a desk five days a week hinders my creative side. I am also inspired by the positive feedback I receive after someone receives a product from my shop. I put a lot of time into creating and designing each piece so there is definitely some personal satisfaction knowing my time and creativity is appreciated.

6. As a small business owner, what is one piece of advice you would share with other small business owners?

Figure out how much it costs to make each of your items (materials, packaging, labor, website fees, etc.) so you know how to price your items.  You don’t want to underpay yourself and you also don’t want to overcharge the customer.  Finding a the right price is easy once you know all your costs before marketing your product.

7. What is a quote that you personally live by, or you have shared with others for inspiration?

Three Words: “Belief, Persistence & Enthusiasm”

TheWoodenCorner on aftcra handcrafted handmade jewelry organizer jewelry box woodwork jewelry box chic modern american made 08

8. What does “handmade” and “handcrafted” mean to you?

To me handmade and handcrafted are one in the same.  It means you start with a design that you dreamed up.  You then acquire the necessary tools and materials you need to build your design.  Most, if not all, of the assembly should be done by hand.  There is no machine manufacturing the same product over and over again.  As a result, each and every handmade/handcrafted item is bound to be unique and authentic.

9. Why did you choose to join aftcra, and what do you enjoy about the community?

I chose aftcra after researching new places to sell my handmade products online.  I enjoy the fact that everything is made in the USA, it’s hard to find products that are made in the USA these days. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of small businesses fail due to the onset of large stores like Home Depot, Target, Walmart etc.  aftcra, in a way, is bringing small business back to the United States.

How Community Can Help a Mom Entrepreneur Succeed in Business from Business Among Moms

The impact of Community with Business Among Moms with aftcra Handmade

Many makers of today are moms pursuing their dreams while also raising their children full-time. 4 Affordable, Portable and Easily Replaceable Backdrops for Branded Product Photos!

4 Affordable, Portable and Easily Replaceable Backdrops for Branded Product Photos Handmade on aftcra by Merriweather Council

Styling branded product photos can be so fun! It can also be a huge challenge if you feel overwhelmed with options or totally drawing a blank on where to start. Hopefully this list will get you feeling inspired to try something new that will compliment your brand!

All of these are low cost, and easy to replace. When I lived in Boston, I had the most perfect little ledge against a white wall in my apartment, but when I moved, I didn’t have that anymore! I will admit, I panicked a bit. It took me a while to establish a new backdrop that would work as well!  These elements are also  “blank” enough that they won’t distract from your product, which is key for styling photos!

The suggestions on this list are portable, affordable, and easily replaceable!

Vintage books
I love the look of a worn book (and the smell, but that’s not really relevant here) and I think they add interest and can support branding if used properly in product photos! These worn covers work well for brands that have a vintage flair or a rustic feel. You can get them cheaply from thrift stores or you might even have some laying around! Even if you mixed up the cover colors, the cohesion of using the same prop type over and over would help brand you shop. Also fun is opening the book to style a product on the text pages.

Foam sheets
Foam sheets are readily available at any craft store – generally they are over in the kid craft sections but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a professional look. I like these sheets because they come in bold, solid colors -perfect for brands that have modern aesthetics or a youthful vibe. Bonus, these are easy to clean, so if you had a situation or styling idea that might result in a small mess, you could rinse these right off. You can also easily make holes in them if you needed.

Scrapbooking papers
Another backdrop that works well for nearly any brand that produces a small product such as jewelry or hair accessories is scrapbooking paper. You’re familiar with the most enticing isle in the craft store, yeah? Chock full of textures, motifs, colors and themes, there is sure to be a paper that would suit your brand! These are available as flat sheets, vellum papers, acetate sheets or even embossed or die cut! This is a fun way to add interest for super low cost!

Natural materials
Natural materials such as slate, wood slices or even linen fabric are easy to move about and can support a brand that has a earthy appeal or outdoor loving audience. Each of these materials has variety within itself – obviously linen is available in a range of colors, and stone and wood are exquisite on their own and different from piece to piece.

Our Q&A with Natalie of Natalie V Mason

Natalie V Mason Interview on aftcra - Handmade Handcrafted tote bags - ombre pillow throws - hand dyed table runners

With a line of impeccable handmade pillows in a variety of textures and colors, incredibly handcrafted leather and fabric tote bags, and gorgeous home decor pieces we wanted to introduce you to Natalie of Natalie V Mason, aftcra’s featured artisan for August. We sat down with Natalie to learn more about her business, how she crafts her products, and where she derives her inspiration to keep her collection fresh, current and totally unique.

Natalie V Mason on aftcra - handcrafted throw pillows, table runners and tote bags American made 02

1. Tell us about yourself and your company, Natalie V Mason

Hi! My name is Natalie Gshwandtner and my business is Natalie V Mason. I make a variety of home goods and accessories from fabrics that I hand dye, screen print, or digitally print with my own designs. For those that prefer to DIY, I offer my digital designs by the yard on my website: http://www.natalievmason.com.

I’ve been in business for about three years now, though I’ve dabbled in the arts since I was a child. My Dad is a talented artist and always exposed me to a variety of mediums.

2. Share with us a little more about your work space.

My studio space is located within The Workhouse, an artist collective in beautiful Bend, Oregon. Our brick warehouse is part of the Old Ironworks Arts District and we share the property with an amazing bakery, a clay and ceramic studio, a jeweler, and another artist collective. My colleagues in The Workhouse include a clothing designer, woodblock printer, jewelry designer, lampworker, an encaustic artist, a gal who paints with beer and coffee, and a fine artist. You can learn more about The Workhouse here: http://www.theworkhousebend.com/

3. How did you get started in your line of work?

My recent foray into fabrics and the arts stemmed from a need for new curtains and an inherited sewing machine. I’ve always been a bit of DIY’er, and a big time penny pincher, so when my husband and I found ourselves needing a bunch of new drapes, I couldn’t bear to buy them. I had so much fun making the curtains and shopping for fabrics, that I started making more things. I quickly determined that this was an expensive hobby, so I’d better start making money at it. From there I learned how to dye and print fabrics, and how to design repeats using my own watercolors and block prints.

4. How did you come up with the name of your shop – Natalie V Mason?

I wanted a business name that would grow with me, wherever I went and for whatever I decided to do.  I’ve been on a creative bender for the past three years, and my business is constantly evolving. So I just went with my own name. I decided to use my maiden name because “Gshwandtner” is a mouthful.

5. How do you create your work?

My designs often start out as block prints or watercolors. I then print them onto fabric (by hand or digitally) and assemble them into home goods and accessories. We are always bouncing ideas off of one another here at The Workhouse, and some of my products have started out as suggestions from my colleagues.

6. What is the inspiration for your work and Natalie V Mason?

I am a beach baby at heart! My favorite coastal areas often lend inspiration: eclectic Key West, laid back San Diego, the rugged Oregon Coast. My mother in law is an incredible gardener, so whenever we visit I like to wander around her garden and take pictures of the peonies, lavender, bees and frogs.

7. What is your next new exciting project?

I am always working on new fabric designs! My latest designs feature falling leaves in a variety of bright colors. Look for new tote bags and pouches in September!

8. As a small business owner, what is one piece of advice you would share with other small business owners?

“You” are not your target market. I am a bargain shopper and when I started, I really struggled with the fact that my prices are much higher than places like World Market and Target. I’ve accepted that I simply can not price-compete with mass-produced goods. There are plenty of buyers out there who value handmade and one of a kind goods. The trick is to find them!

Natalie V Mason on aftcra - handcrafted throw pillows, table runners and tote bags American made 01

9. What is a quote that you personally live by, or you have shared with others for inspiration?

“I believe that the craftsman, the artist, the cook, the silversmith are peacemakers. They instill grace; they lull the world to calm.” This little quote popped up while I was reading “House of Stone” by Anthony Shadid. I read it during a time that I was feeling very discouraged, and it really helped pick me up and make me feel less “silly” about trying to make it as an artist. On a less philosophical note, I love to tell people that “pain is weakness leaving the body.”

10. What does “handmade” and “handcrafted” mean to you?

It’s such a subjective term! I feel like some sweat and tears, pride, care and passion, need to be involved to make an item handmade. When I buy a mug from the ceramic studio next door, I know for a fact that Chad sweat on it when he pulled it out of the kiln. When I buy a ring from Marianne, who works next to me at The Workhouse, I know that she cursed when she burned her finger while soldering. When I attach the leather straps to my tote bags, I saw each rivet from a large brass tube and use a hammer and anvil to shape and flatten them until they are just right. Sometimes I smash my finger and sometimes it takes a few tries and some foul language. Such is the nature of making things by hand. Even when we get things down to a process, there is always that margin of error that makes each piece unique and more desirable.

My digital fabrics sold by the yard? Those aren’t handmade, even though I designed them. My tote bags and pouches made with my digital fabrics? Definitely made by hand with pride.

11. Why did you choose to join aftcra, and what do you enjoy about the community?

I’ll be blunt: I initially joined aftcra because it is not saturated with mass-produced goods. Since then I have found that aftcra really does attract the kinds of buyers who appreciate my products and who aren’t afraid of my price points. And, though I have much love and respect for my fellow artisans around the world, it is nice to be a part of a community that supports American-made goods.

4 Passive Ways to Advertise Your Online Shop

4 Passive Ways to Advertise Your Online Shop by Danielle Spurge of the Merriweather Council on aftcra handmade shop advice

I’m sure you’ve read lots of information about how to advertise your online shop. There’s lots to think about and people are always coming up with clever ways to promote their products.

But we hear less about the standard, basic, passive ways to inform people about our work. Here are a few super simple and smart ways to passively generate more traffic to your shop and inform more people about what you do.

Email signature link
I love email signatures because they inform people of your pertinent info without any of the awkwardness. You decide what it should say – and where it should link – and plug it in once. With the volume of emails you’re likely sending for both personal and business reasons, not having an email signature that links to your shop is a missed opportunity.

Facebook cover photo + profile picture caption link
Facebook pages are garnering less and less organic engagement. The situation with getting people to like your Facebook page hasn’t changed much – but since that liker will most likely not see a majority of your unbolted posts, it’s important to make that first experience on your page a powerful one. Use the caption areas on your profile and cover images to introduce yourself and your business. Make your cover image clear, bright and branded – and leave a link to your shop. While you can leave links to your shop in other places on the page standard, we know people love to flip through photos.

Blogging
While blogging is in fact a decent amount of work compared to the other items on this list, it becomes passive in the sense that once it is there, it continues to work for you. Blogging is great for educating and informing your customers, but it is also great for generating traffic to your site. Blog posts tend bring in a lot of traffic from search so it is a good idea to write posts about your products every now and then that are highly focused on a particular key phrase. Of course you want to include links within the post to purchase the item that’s being discussed. These posts can continue to generate traffic for you even once they are a few months old or more.

Pinned tweet
If you use twitter, log in from your desktop and compose a tweet that directs people to your shop. Once the tweet is published, you can toggle the “…” and select “pin to your profile page.” It’ll show as the first tweet anytime someone views your profile, no matter what else you tweet, it will remain at the top!

What do you think? Smart and simple right?

Our Q&A with Carolyn of The Natural Choice Apothecary

The Natural Choice Apothecary Handcrafted bath and body products natural made in USA aftcra 11

We met with Carolyn to talk about her artisanal shop, The Natural Choice Apothecary, aftcra’s featured store for July. Get to know the story behind The Natural Choice Apothecary, how Carolyn and her husband create their botanical bath and body care products, and where she finds her inspiration to create classic and fresh spins on handmade apothecary products for The Natural Choice Apothecary in our interview.

1. Tell us about The Natural Choice Apothecary

My name is Carolyn, my husband Ulrich and I are the herbalists behind The Natural Choice Apothecary. Together we handcraft spa grade, botanical based, bath and body care products with vintage roots, reminiscent of simpler times. At the foundation of our natural care line we begin with homemade base oils, naturally infused with organic and wild crafted herbs. Our lightly tinted products feature our own unique plant-based dye.

We live cradled in the woods of South Carolina, and we are surrounded by a forest full of medicine. Working from home allows us to harvest local herbs and flowers as they come into season. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than spending time in our garden and going out for an adventure in our woods with a harvest basket, collecting the hidden and forgotten bounty that nature provides us.

2. How did The Natural Choice Apothecary get started?

It all started back in 2007, when my daughter was diagnosed with psoriasis. As anyone with sensitive skin, or any uncomfortable skin condition, knows finding soothing body products can be a bit of a nightmare. The more I learned about the synthetic ingredients, and the more I watched my little one struggle with the progression of her condition, I knew I needed to find a natural answer.

I poured over texts (classics from the 1970’s still remain my favorites), took classes in Herbalism and Aromatherapy, and taught myself from scratch how to create healthy, safe, and natural products for my daughter. I quickly learned there was a real demand for this type of quality product, and at the spurring of friends and family The Natural Choice Apothecary was born.In the Spring of 2012 we started displaying our products at the local farmers market and at nearby art shows. In December of 2012 we joined the world of online crafters. Our goal remains the same now, as it was in the beginning, we want to create natural, botanical based options for everyone from infants to grandparents.

3. How do you make your botanical body products?

Most of what we make is a blend of cooking, science experiments, and playing with plants and flowers. We have a dedicated studio, in our home, for the actual production of the products. The gathering happens in our back yard and we have a heavy duty dehydrator to preserve the bounty we gather.

4. How did you come up with the name “The Natural Choice Apothecary”?

When the time came to turn my hobby into a business, we spent weeks brainstorming. We wanted the name to be something simple and direct. Our products are “all natural” and we wanted the name to reflect that as well.”Apothecary” was a popular 1800’s word for a person who prepared and sold medicines. Our natural lifestyle relies heavily on herbs for medicine. We use herbs to flavor our meals, we drink herbal tea made with petals, leaves & roots, we use infused into oils for salves, lotions, and home remedies. We loved the old timey, nostalgic feel of the word Apothecary and we felt that “The Natural Choice Apothecary” was the perfect reflection of our homesteading inspired lifestyle and our handmade product line.

5. What is the inspiration for your work?

Usually new product ideas come from custom order requests. Often a client will ask us if we can fill a need they have. I love to research and tinker so coming up with new formulas is always an exciting challenge. All of our new products go through a few rounds of customer testing (no animal testing here. LOL) before being offered to the whole online world.

6. What is your next new exciting project?

We currently have a new line of vegan lip butters in the testing phase and we are also working on a new line of herbally infused body lotions that should be ready by the holidays.

7. What piece of advice would you offer to other small businesses?

During my 20’s I spent several years working as a representative for a MLM beauty company. Most MLM companies are very big on supporting your team members, working together, sharing ideas and promotional materials, reading motivational books together, setting goals, and recognizing achievements. When I began working in a more freelance environment, I found myself longing for that team spirit I had with my previous endeavor. My advice to other small business owners is to network. Do it all the time! Find online groups of other people that craft with the same medium as you, join other work-from-home groups, meet with small business owners in your own area, join groups for sellers on the same platform as you. Learn from each other and share tips, encouragement, and collaborate together!

THe Natural Choice Apothecary Robin Williams Quote Inspiration aftcra

8. What is a quote that you personally live by, or you have shared with others for inspiration?

“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” ~ Robin Williams

I believe that fresh, new ideas are wildly important to life and progress. Each generation rebels and tries to do a better job at living life than the previous generation. I’m humbled and honored to have the opportunity to live in an era where unique ideas are celebrated and new concepts can spread virally across the world in minutes.

9. Why did you choose to join aftcra, and what do you enjoy about the community?

Initially I chose to join aftcra because it was free to open a shop and all of the products sold on the site had to be handmade. They also made it very simple to import my whole Etsy shop into a new aftcra shop.

The platform was pretty easy to learn and the staff was prompt with answers to all of my questions. I was very excited to get my first sale within a couple days of opening my shop! Once I got a sale I was motivated to read everything I could find about this cool new site, to find more sellers, and to network as much as possible!

10. What does “handmade” and “handcrafted” mean to you?

To me, “handmade” is something that you have literally made with your hands and “handcrafted” refers to something requiring a practiced skill or art.

Welcome aftcra Guest Blogger: Danielle Spurge of The Merriweather Council

The Merriweather Council Handmade Shop Business Advice - Intro to Danielle Spurge

The aftcra team would like to extend a warm welcome to Danielle Spurge of The Merriweather Council as an aftcra guest blogger. Danielle will be joining the aftcra blog monthly to provide sellers with advice for their handmade shop. Before she starts whipping out her best practices, tips and tricks we want you all to get know Danielle, gain a little insight into her experience with handmade, and understand her passion for makers.

The Merriweather Council Handmade Shop Business Advice 04

The Merriweather Council was established in 2010 after my post college plans fell through at the very last minute, about two days before graduation. For five years The Merriweather Council focused on providing high quality custom hand embroidery. As my business grew, other makers would reach out to me for advice and I found that I loved chatting shop and strategy with others. In late 2014 I set out a plan for the new year that would allow for me to shift my focus from making products to supporting other makers. After five years of working alone, I really wanted to explore the things I had spent much less time on but loved just as much. My goal for this year is to empower creatives to share their work with confidence and the educate handmade shop owners on how to leverage and prosper.

Makers in business are a very cool and intrepid group, and they don’t have time to waste. I aim to provide clarity and insights from my five years of experience to help handmakers get more out of the work they are already doing -and have done- so they can spend more time doing the work they love.

Shop Made in the USA with aftcra

Shop Made in the USA with aftcra - Handcrafted goods made in America

“Made in the USA” is aftcra‘s commitment – not a fad. We aren’t jumping on a trend; we are supporting our local artists and makers. When aftcra was first founded, our mission was to help support artisans around the U.S. American Makers have always been at the forefront. We want to celebrate their talent, their background, their communities and their craft. We are proud to be the only handmade marketplace representing American makers.

There’s something special about American made goods. And when a product is made in the USA by a maker there’s a certain quality to their creation. These makers create their products with pride and love. Sometimes their talent is something passed down generation to generation. Whether it’s a metalworker who forges their own handcrafted jewelry, or a maker who knits beautiful scarves, everyone has a story to share. Shopping handcrafted goods made in the USA just makes a whole lot of sense.

Shop Made in the USA with aftcra - Abraham Lincoln Quote about America

We believe in putting a spotlight on the talent of the handmakers around the USA. We’ve made it aftcra‘s mission to celebrate America’s makers. Whether you’re looking for handcrafted jewelry, American artwork, American handcrafted home decor, handmade clothing, or accessories made in America you can find it on aftcra.

Why Community Matters for Makers

Why community Matters for Makers with Academy of Handmade aftcra

Guest Contribution by: Sharon Fain, Academy of Handmade

We started Academy of Handmade because we wanted to celebrate the amazing jobs makers do and get very little recognition for. After it was decided an awards show for makers was needed, we quickly realized that an ongoing community for makers that was neutral (read: not a group that was trying to get you to buy something or that supported a selling platform specifically). As a PR practitioner, I had the luxury of membership to trade organizations like Public Relations Society of America that would organize social and educational AND an awards show for our industry. Plus they advocated for the industry. We saw nothing really like this for makers and knew that community would be a key part of what we do. Here’s a few reasons why community is essential for your business.

1) You Need an Understanding Ear: When you decided to sell what you make, you were likely doing so because you got to choose work that was meaningful to you that also made you money. What more could you want?

But then you realized that hours in your studio or at your kitchen could be hard. Fulfilling, but hard. And then you also realized a lot of people with “normal jobs” just didn’t get what you do.

To prevent burnout or feeling down, having people who get what you do and can empathize with what you do is vital to sustaining your business– and your own sanity.

Why Community Matters to Makers Academy of Handmade aftcra 03

2) You Need a Sounding Board: Because you don’t have coworkers or even a boss, making decisions and bouncing ideas off someone else becomes really hard. Sure, you can ask a trusted friend or significant other if your line sheet looks right or if that’s the right kind of packaging, but then you probably have to explain a lot to them and always wonder if they really get it.

Creative and business decisions can either feel like the best idea ever and go really wrong or never happen because you’re telling yourself it’s stupid. While talking with your peers about it won’t ensure flops or success, it can help to mitigate weird feelings that can tend to take over your decision making.

Why Community Matters to Makers Academy of Handmade aftcra 05

3) You Need to Know What’s Up: Before becoming a maker, you likely had a full-time, 8-6 (let’s get real– they were never 9-5) job where you were immersed in what was happening in your industry. You got who the competitors were. You knew the trends and best practices. When you’re a maker it can be very hard to do this without a community.

Peers can share with you the experiences they’ve had on certain selling platforms or craft markets. They can alert you to new business tools or ways of making that will help you create a leaner and meaner business.

Learning what not do is also just as important. When you’re a beginner you can make mistakes that can be avoided with the help of mentors who have gone down that path before. In community, you can find those people.

While the Academy of Handmade aims to cultivate online through our Google group and in-person community through our chapters, you most certainly don’t need to join our community (though, we’d love to have you!) to get one. Do some research and find out who is a good fit for you. Create multiple places for connection online and off. I think you’ll find it an added value to your business. Just remember that you’ll get the most out of community when you participate and put yourself out there.

p.s. One of our favorite things to do in our community is our #emojistatuscheckin each Sunday on Instagram. I hope you’ll join us!

Amazon Handmade and the Handmade Community

Amazon Handmade and the Handmade Community with aftcra - handcrafted goods made in America

Over the past couple of weeks there has been chatter about Amazon and their potential move into the handcrafted arena with Amazon Handmade. Several of aftcra and Etsy’s top handmade artisans were hand-selected from Amazon to participate in a survey to both learn more about the handmade industry and gauge interest from sellers to see if this venture would be something artisans would be interested in pursuing.

It’s a bold move from an e-commerce goliath, especially in light of Etsy’s struggles since they went public in April of 2015. The current assumption is that Amazon would host a separate handmade marketplace for artisans, which beckons back to the day of Amazon’s replication of a bidding site similar to Ebay (Amazon’s venture was eventually closed).

But what does it all mean?

As of the day this post was published, any details about Amazon Handmade haven’t been released leaving the handmade community reeling with speculation – will it be a juried marketplace? Will artisans have similar fees to Amazon.com? Will Amazon’s Prime members have access to purchase handmade goods to be delivered in two days? So many questions, so many extreme points of view, but no concrete answers.

One thing that is sure is that Amazon is an even bigger organization than Etsy. That means that on Amazon Handmade there will be an incredible amount of products in a (assumed) worldwide handmade marketplace – which is a positive and negative for both buyers and sellers. Regardless, it provides artisans a new marketplace to sell their wares in a small industry.

At aftcra we are different. aftcra is the proverbial farmers market – we are an online marketplace where you can buy and sell handmade-only products that are made in America. This has been our goal since we founded aftcra. By featuring handcrafted goods that are American made we naturally create a smaller community where shoppers can purchase goods from artisans in their cities, towns or states, or they can choose to explore products from other areas of the country. And, with smaller communities, the aftcra team is also able to develop meaningful relationships with our artisans, which creates a strong community of artisans.

aftcra is one of the newest handmade marketplaces, but we are a privately-owned, family-owned, and woman-owned business who ensures that our users are our number one priority. As we’ve shared in the past, the only influencers of aftcra are our American handmade community. We allow for open feedback from the aftcra community so all artisan’s and shopper’s needs are being heard and met. For any artists looking for an alternative handmade marketplace, we’d love to work with you.

The Meaning of Handcrafted with Lemon Lime Creations

Meaning of Handcrafted - What Does Handcrafted Mean with Lemon Lime Creations on aftcra

Handcrafted. It’s a word that holds so much meaning in the handmade and artisanal world. We wanted to meet with some of aftcra’s talented artisans to share what “handcrafted” means and the importance of buying handmade goods.

Leanna Prejean of aftcra’s Lemon Lime Creations shared the inspiration behind her work, the what she enjoys about creating her beautiful custom hand-stamped jewelry, and what handcrafted means to her. You can visit Lemon Lime Creations to view and shop her work.

We hope you enjoy Leanna’s story.

Can you tell us a little about Lemon Lime Creations?

I make hand stamped jewelry.  I specialize in cuff bracelets.  While I mainly make completely custom order items, I also am constantly searching for new phrases to put on bracelets.

My inspirations are life in general – my family, experiences (good and bad), news articles, the Bible and classic books.  Quotes, sayings and phrases have to mean something to me if I am going to put it on a bracelet and offer it to the public.  After all, I might be hand stamping that phrase over and over again if it strikes a cord with others.

What does “handcrafted” mean to you?

Handcrafted means taking talent, tools and materials to create something.  The tools might be improvised, the materials something re-purposed; or, state of the art equipment and top of the line materials.  However, the maker, using talent, skill, vision and (depending upon the situation) interpretation of the customer’s description, is creating something original with their own two hands.

What makes handmade goods so important?

Handmade items require dedication to be made.  They require strength of character, determination and love.  A maker puts their heart and soul into their items – this is their dream they are fulfilling in making the item, their skills they are using.  I love the uniqueness of each item.  Even when making an item using the exact same material, pattern and tools, no two handmade items are exactly the same.  And that is beautiful.

The Meaning of Handcrafted with aftcras Lemon Lime Creations

As an artisan, how do you keep reinventing yourself?

I think you reinvent yourself everyday, simply by living in our world.  You are not the same person going to bed that you were when you woke up that day – you’ve experienced new things, thought new thoughts.

My line of bracelets continually grows and revolves.  Phrases I made constantly a year ago are not often requested.  Sometimes they don’t inspire me anymore, and I replace that item with a new item.  Or rework the sample into a new design and different font.

I retake product pictures as often as time permits – cameras are my nemesis.  I am constantly looking for new ways to stage a picture.  I am constantly curating photos.  If the picture wouldn’t catch my eye, doesn’t reflect my style and taste, it will get replaced, even if it looks like it was taken by a professional photographer.  I have probably 100-150 bracelets currently that I have not added to my shops, because I have not been satisfied with the picture.

What do you enjoy most about making?

I am working with my hands – crafting something that will be worn and loved. I love what I do, and I feel that when a maker loves their craft, it shows in the workmanship. I love that if I keep making mistakes (we all have those days), I can go sit outside with my cats in the sunshine for a while and then come in and start over.

I love that I am creating something that I designed with my customers. All of my bracelets can be customized on the inside as well as outside. I find it interesting to have that little peak of what “hidden” message a buyer adds to the inside.  It gives you an insight to the buyer and wearer, a little glimpse of someone’s soul. Often, I will spend hours trading emails with customers, until we have come up with the perfect phrase, font and personalized inscription for a gift. That is what makes this all special and unique – the one on one communication and personally crafting something that becomes a meaningful piece of jewelry and a heirloom.

Our Q&A with Elizabeth and John of ForgottenCotton

ForgottenCotton aftcra

We met with Elizabeth and John to talk about their artisanal shop, ForgottenCotton, aftcra’s featured store for May. Get to know the story behind ForgottenCotton, how Elizabeth and John create their incredible fashion pieces, and where they derive their inspiration to make classic, colorful and edgy accessories for ForgottenCotton in our interview. The story behind ForgottenCotton is a classic entrepreneur-on-the-verge-of-awesomeness story … and we can’t get enough of it!

1. Tell us about ForgottenCotton

We are Elizabeth and John who own ForgottenCotton, where we design and create women’s fashion accessories. We are a full time business and work from our home in Northwestern Wyoming right next to the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. Currently our business is run out of every spare room in our home including, up til last week, our kitchen table. We are working on setting up and moving into our own separate work space on our property.

ForgottenCotton aftcra 02

When we started ForgottenCotton in Fall of 2011 we were living in NYC in a tiny apartment. We feel really lucky that our business has allowed us the opportunity to relocate to such a beautiful state.

2. How did ForgottenCotton get started?

We both were raised in households where creativity was everywhere. I grew up around sewing and creative work as my mother has been sewing, painting, and crafting her whole life. John’s mother is extremely creative and worked in creative fields and was always creating and crafting. Our childhoods were spent surrounded by creative work and people. We both also have backgrounds in the arts. I went to school for theatre, art, and dance and taught art for several years in NYC. John, as well as being an extremely talented guitarist, studied history and philosophy. We started our business as a way to help pay our student loans after we graduated college.

When we saw the potential of what we were doing and the space in the market place we realized this was something we could try. We reinvested our profits into our business as we grew and worked on expanding. We really didn’t have any experience in running a business so each new hurdle was a learning curve. You really don’t know what you don’t know until you have to learn it.

3. How did you come up with the name “ForgottenCotton“?

When we started we were really into the idea of up-cycling fabrics. We spent about two days writing down different words and combinations that we felt would fit that aesthetic.

While we have evolved and grown our business past the ability to upcycle our products the name has stayed.

4. What is the creative process behind ForgottenCotton?

We work as a team so we each have the different parts we do. When it comes to making John does all of the sewing while I do the prep work. We have a smooth running process where we are passing items back and forth for each step. After four years we have a system that flows for us to make the most of our time.

Marking Close Up ForgottenCotton

There are so many responsibilities with running a business and we have naturally developed an even division of work. John handles all the business finances while I take care of packing orders, photo editing, and posting products. John does all the photography and I model our products. We each have our own set of skills and have been able to use these skills to create a balance.

5. What is the inspiration for your work?

We really are interested in creating useful and comfortable items. Our items are ones that are worn, so we are very particular about choosing materials that are right for the project. For example, when we were looking for faux leather we had a very particular vision of the quality of faux leather because we wanted to create something that had the touch and feel of a piece that was special. We easily fall in love with a certain pattern scheme or color palates and that will drive our decisions for an entire collection. We are always searching for what is trending, popular, or unique. We have notebook files full of ideas for items we would like to make part of our collection either now or in the future. We also listen to our customers to see what they are looking for as they are the most important part of the equation.

6. As a small business owner, what is one piece of advice you would share with other entrepreneurs or those considering starting a business?

We have said this before in other interviews but the advice is true and something we strongly believe in.

You have to decide early on if you want to create art or make money. They seldom can coexist.  Many of the projects which we would consider “passion” driven performed rather poorly.  You truly have to find a balance between projects that inspire you and products which are desirable to customers and the current market. Also – as with most things there is no “easy button.” No one gets to wake up one day and have a business. It is countless hours of discussion, planning, decision making, etc. We spend more time working on our business than we did at more traditional jobs. There is no turning it off. We often are answering emails, making orders, or planning new ideas at all hours of the day.

Also remember that there is always room for improvement. You should always be pushing yourself to look at your business and question what can you change, improve, or do differently. Take constructive criticism and see how it applies to you and the vision you have for your business. It can be photo quality or style, product development, or social media. It seems there is never enough time in the day to work on all of the things we have planned or would like to accomplish.

7. What is your next new exciting project?

We are working on developing new hair products for the summer. We have some prototypes we are working on and testing. While we started out selling scarves we have been actively working on expanding our product offerings and this is a part of that goal.

Scarf Model2 ForgottenCotton

8. What is a quote that you personally live by, or you have shared with others for inspiration?

I just shared this on our Instagram the other day, but I really believe in “Stay Humble, Work Hard, Be Kind.” We really believe in putting our heads down and doing the hard work. We don’t get ahead of ourselves or think we are bigger than we are.

ForgottenCotton Quote

At the end of the day we just want to create products people love, provide the highest quality customer service, and pay our bills. We feel very fortunate that we are able to run our business full time and with that comes the responsibility of working hard. We have had some very real reality checks over the course of four years and that keeps us focused on what is important.

9. Why did you choose to join aftcra, and what do you enjoy about the community?

We really love aftcra and what it stands for. We had been keeping our eye on the site since it started and were really excited to join. Honestly, we have tried more than a few venues since we opened and none of them have the personality or care that aftcra offers. We know that there is a need for a marketplace that is truly handmade.

I have so many customers and friends ask us advice on how to know if a business is really making their items. I knew there had to be a better way because people want a marketplace they can trust. What I love about aftcra is the trust customers can have that in knowing the businesses they are shopping with are handmade. They don’t have to go into “research” mode to find out before they purchase. We are excited to be able to be a part of a real handmade community that restores the trust to the customers.

10. What does “handmade” and “handcrafted” mean to you?

We think handmade is a very simple concept – you and your team are making the items you sell. We have a hard time understanding where the confusion comes from with this concept. Handmade means high quality and attention to detail because an individual or team is crafting each item. When you say your items are handmade your customers expect that you are making your items. Simple.

3. Tell us about the creative process behind Manic Trout.

I release 4 collections a year and they need to be ready 3-6 months prior to when they are available. So sometimes I am designing 2 at once but typically I spend about a month with the designs in my head, then get them on paper and plan to try out different materials for a month and finally make samples. Once I have samples made, I edit down the designs to what is the most cohesive to create a tight collection.

4. The name “Manic Trout” is really interesting. How did you come up with the name of your shop?

I dated a fly fisherman, many, many years ago and he called me the Manic Trout. The relationship didn’t stick, but the name did!

5. What is the inspiration for your work?

Anything and everything! The last two collections I designed were mostly thanks to pinterest and the ability to see and gather massive amounts of images. I was obsessed with icebergs, northern lights and photos of the sky from space.

6. What is your next new exciting project?

Here in Austin, we have a fun component of our Fashion Week called Mash Ups. You basically gather a team and create a look which you photograph editorially and then it walks the runway. I have been working with my team this week to get that together, its been a great collaboration!

7. As a small business owner, what is one piece of advice you would share with other entrepreneurs or those considering starting a business?

Do not quit your day job until you are making enough of a profit to grow the business and live. If all of your earnings are paying rent and not going back into the business, you won’t have the cash flow to grow.

8. What is a quote that you personally live by, or you have shared with others for inspiration?

Do or do not…there is no try – Yoda. I have a print of it hanging in the studio too.

9. Why did you choose to join aftcra, and what do you enjoy about the community?

I really like aftcra‘s mission. I am impressed with the social media aspect, especially IG and how much aftcra promotes the artists work!

10. What does “handmade” and “handcrafted” mean to you?

Either made by the designer themselves or by local artisans/a team trained in the medium. I love that I can help support creative people in the community when I need extra hands!
